Budgets

Budgets, only if you want them

Cashfield works without a budget. If you want one, set it for the month or for any category, and Spending shows what is left as you spend.

A budget for the month

The month’s budget sits on Spending’s first card: how much is left, how much is used, and a mark for today, so you can see whether you are ahead of the pace.

It counts what Spending counts, so a card payment or a move to your savings never uses it up.

Cashfield’s Spending screen with example data: $211.95 spent from August 1 to 16, $52.85 less than the same days in July, with the monthly budget 53 percent used, above the ways to compare periods, see recurring payments and open reports
Cashfield’s spending categories with example data, each with its budget: Food and drink close to its budget with $15.15 left, Transport with $84.88 left and Entertainment with $13.01 left

A budget for any category

A category with a budget carries a ring that fills as you spend, and says how much is left or how far over you are.

Set or change it from the category itself, with this month so far and last month beside it to help you choose.

How budgets work

Carried forward

A budget applies from the month you set it until you change it, so there is nothing to renew.

A nudge, never an amount

A notification during the day when a budget is nearly used or over. It names the category and never shows an amount.

Settled every month

Your monthly report says which budgets you kept and which went over.

All in one place

Budgets lists the month’s budget and every spending category, with or without one, and the months before.

Questions about budgets

More answers in the FAQ.

Do I have to set up a budget?

No. Cashfield sorts your transactions and shows where your money went with nothing to set up. If you want a budget, set one for the month or for any category, and Cashfield shows what is left as you spend.

If a category is wrong, fix it once and Cashfield files that shop the same way from then on.

What notifications does Cashfield send?

Four kinds, each with its own switch in Profile › Notifications: a bank that needs you to sign in again, your weekly report on Mondays, your monthly report on the 1st, and a budget that is nearly used or over. None of them ever shows an amount, so nothing private appears on your lock screen.

Does paying my credit card count as spending?

No. The purchases on the card were counted when you made them, so paying the card off is money moving between your own accounts, not new spending. Cashfield finds those payments from both ends and counts them once.
